Hands On Literacy Activities for Kindergarten for Engagement

So.. you’re a kindergarten teacher and you have to teach your students….to….. READ. Simple right? No pressure at all. Alright.. I know. This isn’t exactly the easiest thing to do. It’s because we have to teach them the curriculum or skills all while keeping them engaged. Are you looking for ways to keep your students engaged and excited about reading? I know this is tough. How DO you keep young students engaged? Let’s talk about some things we can do to make it fun and easier for us as well.

What Are They Interested In and Use Themes!

Take the skill that you need to teach and think of how you can present it using a theme. This is how we can keep our young students engaged with hands-on literacy and Math activities. The easiest themes that come to mind are holidays if your school allows this. Seasons are always a safe theme to go with as well. Check out these holiday/seasonal themed hands on literacy activities for kindergarten that are ready for you to use. Here is a free February-Valentine’s Day Literacy Activity pack for you to print and use. Feel inspired to think of ways to use what they are talking about as a way to make connections to what you are teaching.

Get Them Moving

Games like “Touch your head if…, Touch your nose if….”, Four Corners, Write-the-Room activities, and any type of dancing. I like to sing and dance but I also find it super easy to find YouTube videos that get them moving and learning. If you have been teaching you probably already know about Jack Hartman. Another favorite is Heidi Songs. Zoophonics is a research-based multi-sensory Language Arts Program for young learners. Phonics Dance is a method of teaching that is designed to get young readers moving. I used this in kindergarten and the students really love it.
